  • A collective of Indigenous academics and experts from various institutions and organisations undertaking work on Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDSov) and Indigenous Data Governance (IDGov).

MnW developed IDSov principles for Australia in collaborations with national and international delegates who endorsed the principles at the 2018 Indigenous Data Sovereignty Summit in Canberra.

Our Primary activity is educating organisations and community about the origns of and operationalising of the IDSov Principles through Indigenous Data Governance. This education helps organisations and individuals put IDSov into action.

  • The right of Indigenous Peoples to exercise ownership over Indigenous Data. Ownership of data can be expressed through the creation, collection, access, analysis, interpretation, management, dissemination, and reuse of Indigenous Data (Kukutai & Taylor 2016; Snipp 2016).

This is an internationally recoginsed and endorsed definition that cannot be changed even when summarising or paraphrasing.

  • The right of Indigenous Peoples to autonomously decide what, how, and why Indigenous Data are collected, accessed, and used. It ensures that data on or about Indigenous Peoples reflects our priorities, values, clutures, worldviews, and diversity (Maiam nayri Wingara, 2018).
